Anna Valentine, established 1986, creates couture clothing for modern clients with a focus on fabrics, form and function. Her mission is to equip women with an exquisitely made, flattering, perfectly tailored wardrobe of classic contemporary pieces which reflect a clients personality and enhance her lifestyle.
Valentine designs two collections a year from her atelier in London’s West End. The former 19th century grain store houses Valentine’s team of talented designers, pattern cutters, fitters and seamstresses. Valentine believes in using the very best: double faced cashmere, and washed duchess satin and even the interestingly named ‘sasawashi’ are sourced both from Britain and from places across the globe as far flung as Japan and Cambodia. A range of accessories including jewellery, hats and bags are also available, all hand-crafted by artisans.
A former ballet dancer, Valentine takes her influences from the fluidity and elegance of dancers costumes, the pared down simplicity of Scandinavian design, and the flattering rigours of Japanese style draping.
An initial visit involves a meeting to discuss requirements, inspirations and fabrics. Every lifestyle aspect and sartorial requirement is discussed. Measurements are taken so that a toile (a mock-up of the discussed design) can be fitted at the next appointment. No part of the process is overlooked, whether it be sourcing the exact size bead or dyeing a fabric to the perfect tone. The overall approach is of timeless couture, savouring skills and attention to detail, but always with a modern twist.
